Samuel Harrison invented the split ring in the early 19th century. In the latter part of the 19th century Alexander Parkes went on to develop it. However, Frederick J Loudin had a patent for a key fastener, created in 1894. The most common form of the key ring is a single piece of metal in a 'double loop', but Ostrich & Leather trading went the extra mile to design an attractive key ring that is most visible and thus easy to locate when placed in a container among other items.
